Obama asks Congress for education bill by September

In an effort to promote his educational agenda, President Obama asked Congress to send him a new education law by September 2011. He noted that while the Bush-era No Child Left Behind law set the "right goals," measuring student progress and the labeling of schools portions fall short. Obama wants an educational system that focuses on preparing students for post graduation that includes critical thinking, creativity and collaboration in addition to reading and math proficiency. Moreover he supports rewarding good teachers while showing little leniency for bad teachers. Although agreed upon by the House education chair that the law needs improvement, he feels it is unlikely that Congress will be able to meet Obama's deadline.
